- chook watering
I love having chooks as part of our urban farming eco-system, however they require daily attention.
Watering the chooks everyday
I was very pleased to be able to automate the tedious job of cleaning out the chooks water bowl and refilling it every day. I sourced chicken water feeder nipples with cups from Plant Poultry for about $10 each. These trickle water into the cups as the chickens beaks touch the trigger, keeping the cup constantly filled with fresh water.
There was a 1000 litre water tank nearby, so I connected it to the chicken watering cups with 19mm pipe which gravity feeds ie low pressure the water. This arrangement has been operating for over 3 years now with minimal maintenance other than a quick glance to ensure the cups contain water, and an occasional rinse out.
Initially I was concerned that the chooks wouldn’t be able to use it, or not realise that there was water there – but they simply waddled right up to the watering cups feeders right from the beginning. Newly introduced chickens don’t seem to have a problem using the watering system either – whether they see others doing it or not I’m just not sure.
My other un-found concern was that the black 19mm pipe would heat the water in it making it unpalatable for the chooks. This doesnt seem to be a problem, however on exceptionally hot days (it gets over 40 C on some hot summer days here) I do fill a large plastic tub with water and the chooks stand in it to get a bit of relief from the heat 🙂
Another brilliant urban farm contraption – simple but amazingly effective.
